Smartkem has partnered with AUO, Taiwan’s display manufacturer, to develop a rollable, transparent microLED display utilizing Smartkem’s organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs). Ian Jenks, Smartkem’s Chairman and CEO, believes this collaboration positions their technology at the forefront of microLED commercialization, potentially reducing prices from USD 100,000 to more accessible levels.
The unique low-temperature processing of Smartkem’s transistors allows direct application on microLEDs, eliminating traditional mass transfer and welding processes and enabling the use of low-cost, flexible plastic instead of glass. This initiative marks a significant milestone in both commercialization and microLED product development.
