Oracle, SUSE and CIQ launch Open Enterprise Linux Association to target Red Hat

SUSE SA, Oracle Corporation, and Ctrl IQ Inc. have announced the formation of a new industry alliance, the Open Enterprise Linux Association (OpenELA), which aims to encourage the development of Red Hat Enterprise Linux-compatible distributions.

The companies claimed that recent modifications to the availability of RHEL’s source code, which would limit its presence in public repositories, led to the formation of the new alliance. The new policy stipulates that CentOS, a beta upstream distribution version, will be the only publicly available source for RHEL; however, since it serves as a repository, it is never up to date.

As a result, RHEL compatible distributions could no longer be easily created and shared by developers of open-source versions of Enterprise Linux.
