OpenAI LLC has reportedly hired about 1,000 contractors over the past six months to help hone its artificial intelligence models coding capabilities.

Semafor reported the development using sources close to the situation. Cortex, an AI system created by OpenAI, can create code snippets on demand based on text prompts. Billions of lines of open-source code from GitHub are used to train Cortex. Semafor’s sources claim that OpenAI has employed contractors across the globe, including in Eastern Europe and Latin America.

One thousand new hires, or about 60% of them, reportedly work on projects involving data labeling. Data labeling is the process of adding context to AI training datasets in an effort to speed up neural network learning.
