NASA and IBM deploy open-source geospatial AI foundation model on Hugging Face

IBM and NASA announced today that the watsonx.ai geospatial foundation model is now available on Hugging Face.

The creation of the model was first made public in February as part of an effort to maximize the potential of vast amounts of satellite imagery in order to advance climate science and enhance life on Earth.

The open mode was trained using NASA’s Harmonized Landsat Sentinel-2 satellite data (HLS), and it was then fine-tuned for a number of specific use cases, such as burn scar and flood mapping, using labeled data.

The enterprise technologies that IBM has been developing for its Watsonx.ai project benefit the geospatial foundation model, and the company is optimistic that the innovations pioneered in the new model will support both business and scientific use cases.
