Microsoft reportedly developing its own AI chip named ‘Athena’

Microsoft Corp. is reportedly pushing ahead with efforts to develop its own AI-optimized chips in order to reduce costs for training generative AI models like those powering OpenAI LP’s ChatGPT chatbot.

According to reports, Microsoft is creating its own chip for inclusion in its own products to lessen its reliance on external chips and cut costs. The market for AI chips is currently dominated by computer chip manufacturer Nvidia Corp., and its newest H100 GPU was released last year.

With the introduction of this new silicon, Microsoft will join companies like Amazon.com Inc., Google LLC, and Meta Platforms Inc. in designing and constructing their own unique AI chips.
