IBM Corporation has acquired Ahana Cloud Inc., a startup that provides managed and commercial versions of the open-source distributed query engine Presto, for an undisclosed sum.

By doing this, IBM joins the Presto Foundation, which oversees the project that Facebook Inc., now known as Meta Platforms Inc., spun off in 2013. The companies quietly announced their partnership. Presto is positioned by Ahana as a key component of a data analytics “lakehouse,” which is a collection of both structured and unstructured data types.

The software has since been expanded to a variety of other relational and non-relational sources, though it was initially developed to run on the Hadoop framework for storing and processing large data sets.
