China’s Baidu Dismisses Public Launch for ChatGPT-like Product, Ernie Bot

Baidu, the Chinese search engine, calls off a planned live-streamed launch of the Ernie bot, a ChatGPT-like product advertised that was open to the public and media. On March 16th, Baidu’s CEO, Robin Li, walked the journalists through pre-recorded demos displaying Ernie’s capabilities. The scheduled webcast diverted to a closed-door meeting with the first batch of companies testing the product. Format revisions went into effect to meet the growing demand from the over 120,000 businesses that applied to test the Ernie bot.
