C++ Overtakes Java in Language Popularity Index

For the first time since 2001, C++ ranks higher than Java on the Tiobe language popularity index. The most recent index edition revealed that Java had reached a new low.

Java is now outranked by C++ in the Tiobe Programming Community Index for December 2002. For the first time in the index’s history, Java did not place among the top three languages. According to Paul Jansen, CEO of software quality services provider Tiobe, “Performance is still very important today and C++ is the fastest large system programming language out there.”

Based on searches conducted on Google, Bing, Yahoo, and other sources, the Tiobe index ranks languages. The number of engineers in the world, relevant courses, and third-party vendors are used to determine ratings for each language.
