Amazon Web Services Inc. is planning to play an expanded role in the development of connected vehicles. The business said that it has collaborated with BMW Group to create an entirely new and customizable cloud software offering that helps to optimize the way data is distributed and managed from connected cars.

The new software is designed to serve as the basis of BMW’s next-generation, cloud-based vehicle data platform, though it will also be made available to other automakers that want to better integrate vehicle data to accelerate application development.

Though BMW was involved in creating the software, AWS is planning to make it available to other vehicle makers soon as part of its AWS for Automotive offering, where it will serve as the foundation of a new generation of software-centric cars.
